# Email FAQ

> Short answers to common questions about email components, templates, and emails.

> [accordion] What is the difference between a component, a template, and an email?
>
> A component is one approved piece, like a hero or a footer. A template arranges components into a design and lists the copy each email needs. An email is the finished message you send, with its own copy and personalization for each recipient. See the [Email overview](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/index.md).

> [accordion] Do I need to know MJML or code to make an email?
>
> No. You describe what you want to Mary, allGood's AI, and edit the result in plain language. MJML, the email-building language allGood uses, only matters if you want to change an email's code yourself. You can do that under **Edit Source**. See [Editing an email's code](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/editing-the-code.md). Components can't be edited by hand yet, though you can view their code.

> [accordion] If I change a template, do emails I already made from it change?
>
> No. An email is self-contained, so a template change shows up in the next email you make from it, not in emails already built. See [Changing an email template](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/templates/changing-an-email-template.md).

> [accordion] Does allGood add an unsubscribe link for me?
>
> No. You add it to your template or email, and allGood stops any send that is missing one. See [Before an email can send](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/before-an-email-can-send.md).

> [accordion] Can I link to a subscription preference center?
>
> Your unsubscribe link already opens one. The Subscription Center lets a recipient unsubscribe from everything, choose topics, and say which country they're in. Set it up in **Settings → Marketing Kernel → Subscription Center**. See [Set up your Subscription Center](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/settings/email/subscription-center.md). A link to an external preference center doesn't count as your unsubscribe link, so keep `{{ send.unsubscribeUrl }}` in every email.

> [accordion] Where do the From name and reply-to address come from?
>
> They come from your sending domain's settings. See [Set up an email domain](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/settings/email/domains-setup.md). An individual email can override the From name, the part of the From address before the `@`, and the reply-to. There's no screen for this yet, so an agent or developer sets it. The postal address and the domain always come from your domain settings. See [Personalizing an email](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/personalizing-an-email.md#who-the-email-comes-from).

> [accordion] Can I use a formula in an email?
>
> No. Formulas are for lists and rules, such as filtering a list or adding a calculated column. An email's design uses merge fields and Liquid instead. Formulas can still decide who receives an email by filtering the list it sends to. See [Personalizing an email](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/personalizing-an-email.md).

> [accordion] Why does my preview say "Hi ,"?
>
> Either the person you previewed has no value for that field, or the field name is misspelled. A misspelled merge field shows up blank and nothing warns you. See [Personalizing an email](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/personalizing-an-email.md) for how to fix both.

> [accordion] Is A/B testing a separate feature?
>
> No. Two versions plus a router is the whole mechanism. Reporting on which version performed better isn't available for emails. See [Copy and variants](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/copy-and-variants.md).

> [accordion] Can I use a company's industry or employee count in an email?
>
> No, not as a merge field. Only the recipient's company name is available. Write company-specific details into the email's copy. See [Personalizing an email](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/personalizing-an-email.md).
