# Templates

> Build the layout once and list what changes, so making the next email or page is filling in fields.

A **template** is a layout plus a list of what varies. An **Email Template** is a client-safe email frame; a **Landing Page Template** is a page layout. Each one carries a **copy schema** — the named list of what the next email or page has to supply. Subject line, headline, body, CTA text.

That declaration is the whole point. Once it exists, making the next email is filling in a named set of fields rather than deciding again what an email is.

Templates live under the **Templates** toggle in Content. For email templates specifically, see [Email templates](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/templates/index.md). It is the other half of the library, not a filter on the same list.

![Templates are the other half of the library, reached by the toggle](https://mintcdn.com/allgoodtechnologyinc/LW4p5NqCb6SZm7Lp/images/mk/content/templates-toggle.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=LW4p5NqCb6SZm7Lp\&q=85\&s=64b6311a07360dcd83f09663ab4594c8)

Templates are the other half of the library, reached by the toggle.

## Three ways to build one

All three land in the same place. Pick whichever matches what you already have.

> [accordion] From a written brief
>
> Describe the layout you want — what sections, in what order, for what kind of message. Best when you are starting fresh and have a clear idea.

> [accordion] From a URL
>
> Give the address of a page whose layout you want to work from. allGood reads the live page and builds a layout from it. Best when the thing you want to match is already on the web.

> [accordion] From an email or page you already have
>
> Point at an email or landing page already in allGood. Best once you have made a few by hand and want to stop remaking the same shape.

Give it your brand guideline and the right component library alongside whichever of the three you use, and the layout comes out built from approved blocks.

## The copy schema

The copy schema names what changes. A marketer filling the template supplies exactly those fields and nothing else.

![The copy schema: the named fields the next asset has to supply](https://mintcdn.com/allgoodtechnologyinc/LW4p5NqCb6SZm7Lp/images/mk/content/template-copy-schema.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=LW4p5NqCb6SZm7Lp\&q=85\&s=65f7c53fc99f95a837b12912a010800d)

The copy schema: the named fields the next email or page has to supply.

Write the schema for the person filling it. `headline` and `cta_text` are better than `field_1` and `field_2`, for the same reason component guidance is better than component numbering.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The schema is a declaration that the authoring workflow reads and fills. It is not enforced on the finished email or page — nothing outside the workflow checks that a filled email matches the schema its template declared. Treat it as a strong convention rather than a guarantee.

## Cloned and shared parts

A template also says which of its parts are rebuilt for each email or page and which are shared across all of them.

| Part | What happens | Why |
| - | - | - |
| **Form** | Rebuilt per email or page | Two pages from one template should not collect into the same place |
| **Copy document** | Rebuilt per email or page | The words are the thing that changes |
| **Image** | Shared | The image is identical; copying buys nothing |
| **Hosted file** | Shared | Same file, same download |

You do not configure this. It is a property of each type, and it is why filling a template twice gives you two separate forms but one logo.

## Good to know

* **A template cannot change a motion's shape.** A motion template is a different thing, and it lives with motions, not here.
* **Publishing a template locks in what it was built from:** the brand and the component library, at the versions it was built against. Change either later and the template shows as out of date.
* **A template is worth making for the third email, not the first.** You need to have made the shape a couple of times to know what actually varies.
