# Using an image you host elsewhere

> Register an image that already lives on your own site or CDN, so emails and pages can use it without regenerating it.

If an image already lives on your own website or CDN, you don't have to generate it again. Register its address as an **external image**, and emails and pages can use it like any other image.

An external image is an address. allGood doesn't host it, resize it or change it.

## Register an image

Ask Mary to register your image. Give her the image's full address, starting with `https://`. A title and a short description are optional, and so are the image's size and type.

## What allGood does with it

* **Other assets can use it.** An email or page that uses the registered image points at its address.
* **Publishing only records the address.** Nothing is uploaded. The image is already online where it lives.
* **A broken address shows a broken image.** The preview loads the image from your host, so a wrong address fails there too.

## What allGood can't do

* **It can't change the image.** The picture, its size and its format stay on your host.
* **Taking it down doesn't remove the image.** It only ends allGood's use of the address. The image stays up on your site until you remove it there.
* **It doesn't store a copy.** If your host removes the image, pages that use it break.

## When to generate instead

Use a [visual asset](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/visual-assets.md) when you want allGood to host the image, version it, and keep its address stable. Use an external image when the image already has a home you want to keep.
