# Formulas in MK

> What formulas are in MK, where you type them, and which article to read first to filter lists and add calculated columns.

A **formula** is a short instruction that asks a question about one record, or works out a value from it. You type formulas into boxes marked **ƒx**. In a list filter, a formula decides which records stay in the list. In a list column, a formula works out what each row shows.

Most of the time you will not need one. The built-in filters cover simple questions. A formula is for the cases they cannot handle, such as "this or that," number comparisons, and cleaning up messy text.

## Get started with formulas
