# Where you can use formulas in MK

> See every place MK uses formulas, who can edit each one, and which ones you can change in the product.

MK uses the same formula language in several places. Two of them are yours to edit: list filters and list columns. The rest are set up by admins, or are visible in the product but not editable there. This article lists each place, who can edit it, and what the formula does. For a first formula, start with [Filter a list with a formula](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/formulas/filter-a-list.md).

## Places you can edit

If you can edit lists, you can use formulas in these two places. Saving a list needs permission to edit lists. Trying a formula without saving does not.

| Where | What the formula gives back | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **Filters** section of a list | True or false | Keeps a record in the list when the answer is true. |
| **Columns** section of a list | Any value | Shows the value in that column for each row. |

Both appear on lists of people and companies, behind the **+ ƒx** button. See [Filter a list with a formula](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/formulas/filter-a-list.md) and [Add a calculated column to a list](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/formulas/add-a-calculated-column.md).

## Places an admin sets up

These formulas decide how MK processes your data. They are limited to people who manage MK, so a standard marketer cannot edit them. You may see them in a setup you share with an admin.

| Where | What the formula does |
| - | - |
| Orchestration (policy) gates | Decides whether a rule runs for a record. |
| Orchestration (policy) cascades | Decides which records a rule passes work on to. |
| Reducer settings | Decide which records count, how they group, and how they combine into one. |
| Record type display name and description | Work out the name and description shown for a record. |

All of these use the same language as list formulas, so everything in the [formula reference](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/formulas/reference.md) applies. Some can read other records through declared inputs, which list formulas cannot do.

## Places you can see but not edit

| Where | What you see |
| - | - |
| Motion guards ("only if") | A condition that must be true before a record moves forward in a motion. |
| Motion transition triggers | A condition that moves a record to the next step. |
| Content router rules | A rule that picks which variant of an email or page a recipient gets. |

These are read-only in the product. If you need one changed, ask an admin or contact allGood support.

## Where formulas do not apply

* **Emails.** You personalize an email with merge fields and Liquid, not ƒx formulas. See [Personalizing an email](https://docs.allgoodhq.com/mk/content/email/emails/personalizing-an-email.md).
* **Forms and landing pages.** Neither has a formula box.
