A formula is a short instruction that asks a question about one record, or works out a value from it. You type formulas into boxes marked ƒx. In a list filter, a formula decides which records stay in the list. In a list column, a formula works out what each row shows. Most of the time you will not need one. The built-in filters cover simple questions. A formula is for the cases they cannot handle, such as “this or that,” number comparisons, and cleaning up messy text.

Get started with formulas

  1. Understand the idea. New to formulas? Start with What formulas are and when to use one.
  2. Learn how formulas find your data. See which names to type, and where to look them up, in How formulas find your data.
  3. Filter a list. Add your first formula filter with Filter a list with a formula.
  4. Add a calculated column. Show a joined name, a label, or a figure with Add a calculated column to a list.
  5. Handle missing data. Make formulas safe for blank and messy values with Handle blank and messy values in formulas.
